A community radio station has taken to the town's airwaves and even had to battle pirate operators during its forth and last temporary residency.

The Vibe, a community radio station based in Charter Place, is now broadcasting its last restricted licence – the final one before controller Matt Cadman applies for a full-time licence later this year.

The station is aimed at the 13 to 25 age group, promoting issues such as drug awareness, sexual health and careers guidance.

However, the station has already had to enlist the help of local councillor, Chris Leslie, after a pirate radio operators hacked into the station's broadcasts.

The problem was fixed after Councillor Leslie contacted Ofcom, which then removed the pirates so the station could again broadcast to the town.

The Vibe will be broadcasting on 101.8 FM until April 28, when Matt and his team attempt to gain a full-time broadcasting licence from Ofcom.

Matt Cadman said Watford is in need of a new radio station.

“I get a buzz when I see someone brand new from Watford taking to the air for the first time or when a local band performs live – it’s what local radio should be about”, he added.
