Watford have received no approaches from other clubs for Tamas Priskin and Brendan Rodgers says claims by the striker’s agent that he is “very likely” to leave in the summer need to be taken with “a pinch of salt”.

Priskin’s agent Jozsef Vorosbaranyi claimed last week that ten to 15 clubs were interested in signing the Hungarian, including Premiership sides Fulham, Middlesbrough and Hull City and teams in Italy.

Vorosbaranyi, of agency Stars and Friends, said “it is very likely that he will leave Watford this summer”.

But Rodgers said: “I don’t think the club has even had an approach. I think you put one and one together, he is playing well and has scored goals in the second half of this season.

“He is a player who has terrific attributes. He is a player who still has a lot of development still to make. If he is going to progress to that level [Premier League or Serie A] and I know exactly what that level is because I worked there and with those players at that level, he still has a lot of work to do but it is work he can do and do well here.”

Priskin’s current deal runs out in 2010 and Vorosbaranyi did not rule out the 22-year-old signing the contract extension he has been offered by Watford.

But he added he wanted to find a club that offers his client “a step forward” and used Middlesbrough as an example.

When asked what his reaction had been to hearing the agent’s claims, Rodgers said: “My reaction is I am calm. There is no drama. Some people [agents] will do work in certain ways and some will do it in a different way.

“All I know is that when I came into here Tamas Priskin wasn’t playing and he has come in and with the development of how we have been working, he has gone on and people are noticing him now.

“And I know people are noticing him because people are commenting on him, which is great because it shows the team are doing well, he is doing well and his future is progressing well.

“I think he feels happy at Watford. His manager believes in him and he is given the freedom to play and work and obviously the consequence of that success we are having will be a number of our players will be linked I am sure and that will happen over the next couple of years.

“The likes of Don Cowie, who have come in and have been terrific, were maybe under the radar and now because we are starting to do well, people are anxious to know why you are doing well and they come and look and see the players doing well.

“I am calm about it. You get managers linked with other managers’ jobs and players linked with other clubs. You have just got to take it with a pinch of salt.

“The player trusts what we are doing. We are under negotiations with Tamas to get a new contract any way so there is no drama.”

It may not be a coincidence the comments from Vorosbaranyi have emerged as Watford are in negotiations with Priskin over a new deal.

But if the striker did want to leave Vicarage Road, Rodgers hopes the Hungarian would feel comfortable enough to approach him.

He said: “I work closely with my players and will always hope to feel that I am approachable, so if there is a situation with any player, then my door is always open to discuss and I have heard nothing from Tamas.”
