HUNDREDS of scouts took part in a St Georges Day parade in Watford today .

Beavers, cubs, scouts and explorer scouts from troops across North Watford marched along St Albans Road this afternoon.

Crowds of people stopped to watch the procession, led by Harpenden Pipe and Drum band, which came to a halt at Christ Church where a jam packed service continued.

Speaking at today's event, district commissioner for Watford north Ian Leech said: "Scouts from across the country celebrate St Georges Day. St George was the patron saint of scouting. There are two celebrations in Hertfordshire today, but most of them are next week.

"The service in the church today was led by the ninth scout group from North Watford, Hope Green.

"It's all about scouting across the globe this year."

Councillor Rabi Martins, who represnets central ward and is the vice president of Watford North Scouts District, said: "The whole of British pride is around St George. It's so important for us to celebrate our traditions. We're letting so many traditions go and the combination of St George and scouting is what it's about - the civic pride in the country.

He added: "Scouting does a lot for the youngsters, it instills a sense of community and self worth.

"In this country of late we have become very anti youth. That's easy when you don't give youngsters things to do. With scouting there's things to channel them in the right direction and motivate them to become positive as opposed to kicking cans in the street and wondering what to do next."
