MP: 'TV programme revealed nothing new'

Watford MP Claire Ward has again defended her second home allowance, saying a weekend exposé in which she featured revealed nothing she had not already made public.

Ms Ward, who claims taxpayers' money for a flat in Westminster, was featured in a Channel 4 television programme on Sunday night.

The Dispatches programme, entitled The Westminster Gravy Train, investigated MP's controversial second home allowances.

It featured Ms Ward, who claimed the full amount last year – more than £23,000 – despite living just 20 minutes from London.

However, Ms Ward says the programme did not reveal anything about her lifestyle, or the allowances she claims, that is not already public knowledge.

Ms Ward told the Watford Observer that she did, however, accept the general public's trust in MPs is now at rock bottom.

She said she welcomed a Government review of the allowance system, but again defended her own claims.

The mother-of-two says without her Westminster home she would barely see her two young children.

She said: “In reality leaving my family in Watford all week would mean that I would not see them on any night and rarely in the mornings during the week.

“The job of an MP is not 9 to 5 weekdays, it also involves work and engagements at the weekend.

“I am fully committed to my job as the MP for Watford - but like any mother I also have responsibility for my family.

“I accept that public confidence in politicians and the allowances system is at rock bottom and that we cannot continue the present system.

“That is why I welcome the review into MPs' pay and allowances.”

Ms Ward would not comment on the Prime Minister's idea to reimburse MPs for every day they attend Parliament, saying it was not yet a formal proposal to be considered.

Funny that !!! I work 50 miles away and it's not a 9 to 5 job (my choice, that's the nature of the job) But I can't claim full expenses from my tax.I would love to have a flat close to work paid for by my taxes.!!!!

If Ms Ward had read the comments previously placed on this electronic board, perhaps she'd be a little more conciliatory. As for the idea of another £150 a day for turning up -what on earth is a salary for?

Her children are 3 and 1, I believe..

She implied when it snowed that her child went to nursery in Watford, but if they are in Westminster or somewhere else this in London most of the time, how is this possible?

Parliament sat under 140 times last year, and of course that is term time only.

She says on her website that she lives in Watford. But here she says she lives in Westminster with her children.

I think that Dispatches have just left us with lots of questions. What makes it worse is that you can get home quickly and easily, especially if you live that close to the station.

Why are comments deleated from this have your say when they tell the truth and are repeated in later comments?Does Ms Ward have them taken out or is the WO getting like ZaNu Labour in not allowing free speach?
If you are going to withdraw comments just to be PC not much point in having a your say is there?

I think most of us work extended hours without claiming for a 2nd home. Is CW saying that shift workers should be allowed a 2nd home funded by the taxpayer, and all the expenses that go with it? Now that this is all public CW is claiming it was in the public eye, well it wasn't. Only those who sneaked at her expenses knew about it.
