Watford are confident they can secure a permanent move for experienced striker Grzegorz Rasiak.

The Poland international has been on a season-long loan from Southampton and Hornets manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted he has changed his mind on the striker.

Rasiak did not play during Rodgers’ first month in charge and seemed to be out of favour with the Northern Irishman.

But the former Tottenham man has impressed in recent months, scoring three goals in his last four appearances, and Rodgers says he is man enough to admit he may have been wrong about the 30-year-old.

Rodgers said: “We hope to get some solution for him because he has done great.

“It is very important that I have young and dynamic players with energy and intelligence, but you also need experience in this league.

“He has shown consistently since I brought him back into the squad that he has a contribution to make.

“I know he loves it here and would like to stay but we just need to make sure the conditions are right for him and his family to stay, so it is on-going.

“They [Watford officials and Rasiak’s representatives] need to speak with Southampton as well because he is obviously a Southampton player, so we just need to try and find a solution which fits everybody.”

Watford's head of football operations Iain Moody yesterday (Thursday) met with the agent who brought Rasiak to England from Siena five years ago to discuss a proposed move.

The Hornets had an option to buy the striker at the end of his loan spell for £750,000 but it is hoped they can land Rasiak for a much-reduced fee.

The Hertfordshire club are in no position to offer such an amount but with Southampton’s holding company – Southampton Leisure Holdings – recently going into administration, the club bound for League 1 may just be keen to get him off the books.

The Watford Observer understands that Rasiak would be offered a two-year contract, although the striker may have to take a slight pay cut.

Rodgers said: “There has to be compromise and agreement with all parties because we are not in the situation which financially we would like to be or maybe how the players would like us to be.

“But certainly there is room there to manoeuvre an agreement which will allow him to be at the club, which I know he really likes.”
