Watford MP to lose controversial second home allowance

Watford MP Claire Ward will lose her second home allowance, in the wake of a Parliamentary debate about the future of MPs' expenses.

Though a decision on the future of MPs' second home allowances was postponed until an inquiry into the expenses system has finished, it was agreed that all Greater London MPs must stop claiming the controversial allowance.

This affects all constituencies within 20 miles of Westminster, including Watford, and their MPs will now instead be handed a £7,500 London allowance.

MPs also agreed to publish all details of second jobs, and for receipts to back up all claims, during the debate on Thursday.

The temporary measures will be put in place until a full review of expenses conducted by Sir Christopher Kelly takes place.

Ms Ward said: “Obviously this means that over the coming months I will have to make changes to the way in which I work and balance my family. I voted for these proposals because I recognise the need to support a package of proposals that will bring about change to MPs expenses and allowances.

“I did not cherry pick those which would have worked to my advantage, unlike the many Conservative MPs who voted not to allow transparency in the recording of additional earnings from second jobs. This was significant reform and recognition that Sir Christopher Kelly will be bringing forward more long-term reforms. Change is always difficult but, in this case, it is the right thing to do.”

Ms Ward was recently featured in a television documentary that highlighted the fact she claimed £95,000 between 2002 and 2007 for a second home in Westminster.

Lost her allowance now, let's hope she loses her seat next.

Gauke and Clappison will also lose their 2nd home allowance. Both these constituencies fall within the WO's catchment. Why no comment about them? At least Ms Ward voted for these proposals whereas Gauke and Clappison seemingly didn't.

As for captain lard if Ms Ward does in fact lose the seat the bookies predict it will go to the Chair of Conservative Friends of Israel.

That means the region will have another MP, like Gauke and Clappison who's loyalties lie more with an arguably rogue state 2000 miles away than with their constituents. Reportedly, one of their primary agendas is to get the UK to declare war on Iran - nice people - captain lard your welcome to them.

Be philosophical Ms Ward, it was good keeping inside the rules while it lasted. Few of your electorate agreed with the view you ought to have accepted so much.

Whilst she may have voted for these most recent changes she did vote AGAINST disclosing what MP's claimed in expenses in the first place.

I suspect this second yes vote was more to do with electioneering than actually wanting to lose that allowance.

So, I wonder when she and her family will be moving to Watford then...

She won't be moving to Watford. She'll carry on living in North London with her family.

Does anyone beleive that Clare will be brining up her family in Woodford Road, Watford? I think not!

She has been caught with her pants down and has now turned 'Queens evidence'.

I would love her to tell us why she voted against the transparancy in the first place. That would make more interesting reading.

Clare will never recover from this scandal.
