Police target parents as school pick-up chaos continues at Bushey Meads School

The second leg of a police-run cycling course in Bushey moonlighted as a traffic warning to parents today as officers waited at school gates for pick-up time chaos to erupt before them.

Within minutes of the launch of the exercise, a mother in a 4x4 vehicle speeds over from the left lane, crosses the road in the wrong direction and nose dives onto the pavement by Bushey Meads School's zig zag warning signs. Her car is followed by dozens of others coming from all directions as hundreds of children pour out of the school into the road.

Special Sergeant Paul Shannon walks up to explain the situation to the 4x4 driver but she appears unaffected by the looming threat of prosecution seemingly getting in the way of a child's trip home.

Soon there are so many cars illegally stopping outside the Coldharbour Lane school that all the officers can do is shake their heads and create temporary pedestrian crossings.

Sergeant Shannon said: “Earlier we had a big BMW pull up in the middle of the road, four doors open, kids jumping out. Not only are they obstructing the highway but they are just throwing the kids out into the road. It only takes two seconds to be hit by a car.”

He added: “It may be for a few seconds but if you have one lunatic speeding down the road with his mates and smashing into it we have a major incident on our hands.”

Sergeant Shannon is working with Special Inspector Ian Rampaul and Special Constable Wendy Barrr, all three of them volunteers, to educate children on the benefits of safe cycling and walking and teach parents to obey the Highway Code.

The cycling proficiency course at Bushey Meads follows a successful pilot scheme run in Little Reddings School in Bushey.

A police parking patrol was run around Highwood School in Bushey last year and one is on its way to Queens' in Aldenham Road, but concerns raised at last week's meeting of the Bushey Crime Reduction Group pointed to situations quickly returning to chaos soon after officers leave the scene.

Following a recent crash outside Bushey Meads School in which a teenager's car overturned, the school has acted quickly to open its rear gate in Harcourt Road in the mornings and after school and launch the cycling scheme, all meant as a way of avoiding traffic and possible tragedy.

Seargent Shannon said: “It can be a nightmare here. They've been talking to the county council about doing something for some time. It's very sad that it only seems to be when there's a nasty accident that anyone actually does anything to try to fix the situation.”

The apparent disregard for the law and for the safety of "other people's children" by mothers, never ceases to astound me.

A concerted effort to impose fines on the perpertrators over a relativley short period of time would surely get the message home.

What on earth would you expect? Most of the mothers exposed here are as thick as s**t and gutter scum from the council estates. They couldn't care less what they do since they possess the brains of Monty Python's dead parrot.

Oh come on Roy, you've really let the side down now. Why use the words "council estates" to hammer home the point which had been adequately made previously? Yes, in my work as a taxi driver I came across these cretins on a daily basis. In my experience they were invariably women driving the 2nd or 3rd family car and not giving a flying pluck for other road users. So stop comparing council house people to these chelsea tractor twats.
Council house? you were lucky. We used to live in 't shoe box in 't middle of 't road.......

Maybe those "thick as sh1t" parents would benefit from having your home address printed so they can debate the finer points of your ever so brave rant on here.If you ever took the time to be there for the school run,you will notice that the "council est kids" tend to walk, its the ones who think they are better than everyone else, who drive. You know the type Roy,people whose parents were say pub landlords, who then thought they were better than everyone else.
Like i say Roy,you should be prepared to say all the controversial things that spew from your second ar5eh0le,to the people they are directed ats face.I have it on good authority that you would never do this as you are a friendless little sh1t,despised by all and tolerated by family.
I bet your reflection dosent even like you. What a bitter little creature you are,i sincerely hope the M-in-law outlives you and your stuck in Watford with all the working class types.Your gonna die here Roy,so learn to love the place you twisted old buzzard......

I see Roy's subtlety (joke!). Cause a different argument (re social housing) and divert the original point away from selfish people (badly) driving 4x4s. Does Roy drive a 4x4? Do his relatives?

Roy, do you ever say or do anything positive?

Having picked up my neice and nephew from this school I agree that these inconsiderate women are dangerous, selfish idiots and the reaction of the woman the policeman spoke to says it all.

>We used to live in 't shoe box in 't middle of 't road.......<

By 'eck, we used ter dream of livin' in a shoe box! Bluddy luxury!

When I were a lad we were so poor mi mum had to send me to school with pieces of burnt toast strapped to mi feet 'cos my parents couldn't afford to buy me shoes!

BTW, on a serious point, my home and address and phone number is accessible to anyone, since, unlike the vast majority of cowardly posters here, I have never withheld it. If you dish it out, as I confess I tend to do, you must be prepared to stick your head above the parapet. At least give me some credit for this.

And I stick by my original point that I've seen more 4x4s on council estates than I have on private ones. My experience of life suggests that the lower down the social scale people are, given their standard of educational attainment and intelligence, the more they tend to surround themselves with material possessions by way of consolation. Look at your average footballer and his wife and the appalling taste they display in their homes!

Lot's of abusive comments, not a single call for positive action.

Is this how far down the social scale the exchanges have dropped? Or will the comments simply sink to the level of the thoughtless 4X4 drivers, whatever their provenance?

We live opposite a primary school and at around 8.45 and 3.00pm every weekday I cannot drive on or off of my drive as parents think that it is OK to block me in or out by parking across my 'dropped' kerb.

I have asked nicely, asked the school nicely to ask the parents nicely and now I end up having to march into the playground to find the parents to move. They look at me as if I am being unreasonable! and their apology is always weak.

As recently as last week I asked the school if I took down the reg. numbers if the would 'name and shame'They declined.

At primary school level, the fathers' (in a hurry)are disrepectful. The mothers are blissfully ignorant to the mayhem they cause.

If anyone has any ideas which would help me, PLEASE, PLEASE let me know.
