Around 130 people in Bushey munched on bagels at a meal, musical quiz and cabaret event raising £7,500 for charity.

The World Jewish Relief (WJR) Big Bagel event at Bushey Coutnry Club was organised by regular volunteer Nicki Marks.

Nicki said: ““I love the work that WJR does and although it is currently hard for us here, it is so much harder in WJR’s recipient communities. We still live in comparative luxury. No one should live as those in WJR’s recipient communities do and we should all do whatever we can to help. I love the bagel concept as it appeals to all as a mass participation event – and I wanted to see how far I could take it.”

The event was one of several organised throughout the country for the charity.

Paul Stein, Head of Fundraising and Communication at WJR, commented: “We have been overwhelmed by the fantastic response to the Big Bagel, from all corners of the community. The generosity that people have demonstrated in the current economic climate has been beyond all expectation and I would like to thank everyone that participated. The funds they raised will make an immense difference to the communities we help across the world.”
