Former Chater School pupil Joyce Luckhurst sent Nostalgia a photograph of her classmates.

Watford Observer: chater school

Reader Joy Luckhurst is pictured in the back row, far right, in this class photograph of Chater School from about 1929.

Mrs Luckhurst, of Brookdene Avenue, Oxhey, wrote: “Having read that it was the 100th anniversary this year of Chater School, I thought your readers might be interested to see this photo that I have had for 80 years. (I am now 90).

“I am the one on the right-hand end of the back row.

“My elder brother and my twin brother and I all started at Chater School. I remember my first teacher was a Ms Hutchins. My husband Bert was also a pupil at Chater School.

“When we came to go up into the Junior school, the girls were on the ground floor and the boys on the top floor, and as mentioned, the boys entered from Southsea Road, but the girls entered from Harwoods Road and as there was a gate or fence at the side between the fence and the school wall it was a case of never the twain shall meet.

“The teacher of the class that is shown in the photograph was a Miss Jump and we were all very fond of her.

“I wonder whether there are any of my old classmates still alive. My surname was then Webb.”
