The M1 southbound is closed between junction five (Watford) and junction four (Edgware) after a serious accident involving a motorbike and a car.
Trapped traffic has been released from the motorway, which closed again to allow the vehicles to be recovered.
Motorists are now experiencing heavy traffic and long delays on the A41 southbound, following the incident at around 12.15pm.
The Highways Agency expects normal service to resume at around 4.30pm.
