Officers investigating a motorway crash that left two motorcyclists in hospital and the M1 closed have made a public appeal for witnesses.
The incident happened on the southbound carriageway between junction 5, at Watford, and junction 4 of the M1 shortly before midday on Sunday.
The motorcycle, a blue and silver Triumph Rocket, was travelling in lane three of four before colliding with the central reservation barrier for no apparent reason.
The 44-year-old male biker from Staffordshire, was then taken to Watford General Hospital.
He is currently being treated for serious injuries to his leg and arm, and is expected to be in hospital for a few days.
A female passenger, aged 42 from Staffordshire, was also taken to Watford General Hospital with serious injuries. She is currently being treated and will also be in hospital for a few more days.
The M1 southbound was shut for two hours on Sunday as the bikers were treated.
Investigating officer, PC Ian Breacher, said: “I am keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision.
“They might be able to shed some light on exactly what happened and I would urge them to get in touch with me.”
Anyone with any information on this should ring PC Breacher via the non-emergency number 0845 33 00 222.
