Watford Junction plans get cash boost

Plans to renovate Watford Junction have received a major boost following news the project has been approved for a multi-million pound grant.

The train operator, London Midland, has received approval for funding for the improvement programme, which is estimated will cost between £1.5 million and £3 million.

As part of the plans the station forecourt will be improved, along with the platforms and the station entrance.

The plans are for work to begin next Spring, with the improvements completed by September 2010.

The detailed design phase will start this summer, before plans go on public display later this year.

What? Again?! How many times have they drawn up plans for this? The only good point about the previous plans being silently shelved is that they were so full of mistakes, Network Rail and the architects would have been under fire.

I guess the plans for the new north entrance and transport interchange have been shelved with the housing development falling through. So no improvement to accessibility- the same trek to the front of the station for anyone coming from North Watford, and no new route to get people out of their cars from the M1, park and get the train into central London. A new coat of paint for the station instead.

The money quoted will not buy a huge amount (they spent more refurbishing a towen centre night club). So this will be no doubt worthy but limited improvements. One would be a new entrance/exit to platforms 1-4 via the old Red Star parcels car park to give a more direct link to the bus station. which by the way must be the dirtiest most litter strewn area in Watford. New covered secure storage for cycles. Better facilities for the abbey branch. No doubt though most money will be spent on equipment to reduce jobs. so expect more ticket machines and fewer staff in the ticket office - computerise announcements rather than a person.

Lets hope so,eh.The staff at the junction should enter the world hide and seek championship, they are so good at keeping out the way.Maybe they could put ticket machines on the Abbey Flyer, that way you could BUY a ticket, rather than hunting down the lazy tw4t with the ticket machine who sits out the way.
I would rather deal with a machine, than a person and that way,at least you dont miss your connection..
