Farmers gather for safety day in Aldenham

More than 250 farmers saw the consequences of using machinery incorrectly when they attended a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) event in Aldenham.

The aim of the event, on Tuesday, was to help reduce injuries happening on farms in Hertfordshire.

Agriculture is one of Britain’s most dangerous industries and the safety day tackled a range of topics designed to lower the number of accidents.

The farm safety day, held at Patchetts Equestrian Centre, in Hillfield Lane, featured demonstrations showing the incorrect use of agricultural equipment.

HSE principal inspector David Head said: “Year on year, over the last decade the number of injuries in agriculture has remained at a consistently high level. These accidents don’t just destroy lives, they destroy whole families and often their farms too.

“The latest statistics highlight the dangers and in these difficult financial times, farmers and workers might be tempted to take risks by cutting back on help or taking shortcuts to save money. We want to make farmers, their families and agricultural workers stop and think about how they can be aware of the dangers around them.”
