Cars block fire engines on route to house blaze

Firefighters have pleaded with car owners to park more intelligently, after illegally parked vehicles blocked fire engines from getting to a serious fire early this morning.

Firefighters were called to a terrace house in Hatfield Road, in Watford, at about 5.30am.

The fire is thought to have started in a bedroom, after the family lit candles to deal with a power cut in the area last night.

However, when fire engines arrived at the scene they were initially unable to get to the house because of illegally parked cars blocked their path.

Crew Commander Tony McMenamin told the Watford Observer this morning: “Unfortunately due to some very poor parking down to residents in and around the nearby streets it delayed our fire engine getting to the fire.

“We had to actually push some cars away and it delayed us by a good few minutes.”

Five people were involved in the blaze – believed to be a couple, their daughter and their grandchildren.

Nobody was injured in the fire, by crews reported “substantial” damage to the property.

One fire engine from Watford and one from Garston Fire Station were sent to the blaze.

Crew Commander McMenamin added: “Once we actually got there it was quickly dealt with the fire, but there was a lot of parking on double yellow lines which delayed our attendance.

“We just couldn't get our fire engines around some of those corners.”

If they are Illegaly parked, they should be prosecuted for endangering life. There is no excuse. I bet the perpetrators would soon cry foul if one of their loved ones was put in danger because if someone doing something illegal.

Not good I know but I don't suppose parking is a problem in Sarratt?

Its only a problem in Watford because every driver wants to park outside their own front doors......with all their cars.
If ever Watford needed a CPZ,its along that stretch of road. All the grubby little bedsits and multiple occupier houses are always going to make parking a nightmare.Send the clampers round, they would soon stop parking there if they had to keep picking up their motor from the clampers yard....but your spot on about old Spence,he dont live in the real world,he still lives with his mummy....

I agree with Spencer. How would you feel if a friend or relative died because some idiot had parked in such a way that the ambulance never turned up?

The issue is the number of houses with more than 1 car and local businesses using these roads for free parking. If you try to park up after 9pm you usually have to choose if to park 10 mins away, or park in a bay on st albans rd and risk your car being trashed by drunks or park illegally on the double yellows on the corner knowing its not patrolled until 8.30. Cpz's will make no difference unless these are patrolled at night too.

CPZ is brilliant. I have lived at my address almost 20 years, we've had CPZ for about 10 years.

It's no exaggeration to say it has made a really positive change to the quality of life here!

If you enforce the CPZ,the people will not park illegally. If a tow wagon came round and lifted the offenders on the double yellows, hey presto end of illegal parking.
Your statement above about the hardships of parking highlight the problem. That area was not designed for cars, hence the fact that there are no drives etc.Its not a god given right,to park outside your front door, people are getting lazier.I bet there are people who live off St Albans Road, that drive to the shops so its not really fare to blame the shoppers for doing the same. Why so many cars, when the main bus route through Watford,is at the end of the road. The reason is, we are all turning into idle b4stards.It should be one house, one parking permit. If you want a second car, where you park it is your problem. That would sort out the problem. The problem is not parking, its illegal parking, which is caused by lazy, ignorant and selfish people.Lets face it,we all know what yellow and double yellow lines mean, well all drivers should, they have a legal obligation to know.So every one of the drivers, know they are breaking the law,yet choose to do so,rather than walk a little way.

Its very easy to comment when you dont live there.....
I live in the next road along and will park on a double yellow line if there are no spaces. There are lots of comments but no suggestions.
I am happy to park legally but where, if there are no spaces in all of the surrounding roads what do I do?

CPZ will not resolve anything but will just be a money making scheme.

As for your comments RSIAP, Meriden I used to live there and was lucky if I had any wheels if I parked o some places in the Meridan
