Banned driver jailed for moving car blocking neighbour

A banned driver has been jailed for eight months after he was caught behind the wheel while on a suspended prison sentence.

Amad Khan, 26, of Rose Gardens, Watford, was spotted by police in his brother's Renault Laguna, while serving a three-year ban, on May 7.

Khan made off, but admitted in interview that he was not insured and was a banned driver.

He claimed to be moving the vehicle seen in Leavesden Road, Watford, because it was blocking a neighbour's drive.

Khan has a lengthy list of driving convictions as well as convictions for violence. In 2003 he was banned for 36 months for drink driving and other offences. Three years later he was banned for a further three years for dangerous driving and sentenced to three years' prison for robbery.

Khan pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to driving while disqualified and without insurance.

He also admitted failing to turn up for unpaid work as part of a community order.

Both sets of offences put him in breach of a suspended prison sentence.

Sentence had been adjourned until Tuesday for reports after the court was told Khan had a job with an accident recovery service and was trying to turn his life around.

However, Judge Stephen Warner concluded at St Albans Crown Court on Tuesday that only an immediate custodial sentence was appropriate.

As well as the eight-month prison sentence Khan was disqualified from driving for a further 18 months.
