Crowds gather at Parmstock, the biannual music festival at Parmiter's School in Watford

A “unique” open air music festival brought together bands from across Watford to a stage set in the grounds of a Garston school.

Parmstock09, the seventh outing for this biannual event at Parmiter's School, in High Elms Lane, saw a mixture of rock and indie groups, DJs and the “ubiquitous” staff band perform in front of crowds gathered on a sloping grass bank.

The event, held yesterday (Saturday), aimed to raise £2,000, to be split between a Leukaemia charity and Music Against Racism.

One of the student organisers was Alex Overstall, 18, who has just completed his A-Levels and hopes to study geography and geology at Southampton University in September.

He said: “Parmstock is a great outdoor event for everyone. There's music for everyone – a couple of DJs, rock bands, a bit of indie – and it's all for a good cause.”

Physics teacher Alastair Lavin “inherited” the role of Parmstock organiser, after founders Jon and Chris de Groot left the school.

They were unable to make this year's event as they are travelling in Cambodia.

Alastair said: “We kept it going because people wanted to keep it going.

“It's a unique event. Not many schools have something like this. There are a lot of bands at the school and it's nice to give them a forum. We try to make it a mix of school-based bands and bigger ones to help make money for charity, which is the ultimate goal. It's just a good day out.”
