Community fun day a success

Community spirit came alive in Leavesden today as families enjoyed a range of activities in the sunshine.

Hundreds of children and their parents flocked to the annual fun day in Aerodrome Way this afternoon.

This year was the second community day organised by the Leavesden Steering Group and it appeared to have grown in popularity.

Organiser Mark Lee, of SPH housing, said: “It has been a fantastic day. We were worried about the weather but it has been kind to us. We have had a steady stream of people.

“Today has been about the neighbourhood and community. It’s about getting people out and talking to each other.”

Mark added: “The estate used to have its problems, many of which were petty such as parking and noise.

"Since we started the fun day these disputes have stopped."

Football, wrestling, face painting and a bouncy castle were just some of the activities children were occupying themselves with.

Many stalls and demonstrations were also attracting residents including a mouth-watering selection of home-made cupcakes, a jewellery stall, a dog show and boxing display.

Abbots Langley PCSO Wesley Gullin added: “The whole point of today is to raise enough money so we can take children on various trips.

“The youngsters have been helping out all day. It’s great to see them and their families enjoying themselves.

“We’ve had some cracking football games. By providing young people with incentives it keeps them off the streets and out of trouble.”

One Leavesden resident was making the most of the sunny weather with her two children.

She said: “This is the second year we have attended the fun day. It’s a great afternoon out and the children really enjoy themselves.

“It gives us a chance to meet our neighbours and have a catch up.”

The day was supported by SPH Housing, Hertfordshire Constabulary, MEPC and Riversmead housing.
