Radlett teenager Charlie McTernan is representing the UK this week in the 41st International Chemistry Olympiad in Cambridge.
The prestigious competition will feature 254 students from 65 nations in the ultimate test of their chemistry knowledge.
Charlie, 18, of Dellfield Close, studied at The Habadashers' Aske's Boys' School in Elstree and was selected after winning a medal in the National Chemistry Olympiad earlier this year.
Taking place until Sunday, Charlie and three other students picked from across the UK will be tested on their practical and theoretical knowledge during two five-hour exams.
Charlie will also have the opportunity to meet like-minded students from around the world and emminent scientists, such as Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, Professor Sir Harold Kroto.
The event, which began in the former Czechoslovakia in 1968 when just three countries participated, is being held in the UK for the first time since its conception.
