Thousands of children and their families in the Watford area enjoyed fun and games today as part of National Playday 2009.
Den building, rope swings, a mobile climbing wall, face painting and camp fires were just some of the free play activities that occupied children in Leavesden Country Park in Abbots Langley today.
While junk modelling, rounders, arts and crafts took place at Harwoods Adventure Playground, in Vicarage Road, and Harebreaks Adventure Playgrounds, in Leggatts Way.
In support of this year’s ‘Make time’ themed playday Three Rivers District Council and Watford Borough Council ensured there was plenty to do for the young ones.
Leisure development manager for Three Rivers District Council Alison Phin said: “This is the third event we have organised to mark playday. We are expecting about 700 people to turnout.
“Play is an important part of growing up, so we're delighted to take part in this national initiative. We hope it encourages people to play outdoors.”
Leavesden park ranger Martin Brooks added: “I hope the activities will encourage everyone to enjoy and take responsibility for the park.
“Children will really get to explore the outdoors today and expand their knowledge of the environment.”
The annual celebration, coordinated nationally by Play England, highlights children’s right to play.
Mother-of-two Sharon Dowding, of Abbey Drive, in Abbots Langley, was having fun with daughters Leia, 11, and nine-year-old Ella.
She said: “We come to this event every year. It’s a great way for the children to make new friends and for the adults to socialise too.
“All the parents make sure the date is in the diary before we break up for the end of term.”
Eleven-year-old Josh Standen was enjoying trying out the new outdoor gym equipment in Leavesden Country Park.
Mum Sue said: “There are lots of things for the youngsters to try out. Josh loves sport so it’s perfect for him and boys of his age. It keeps them active.”
