An Abbots Langley school will receive a makeover next week thanks to staff at a local supermarket.

Staff from Sainsbury’s supermarket will revamp Breakspeare School, in Gallows Hill Lane, on Tuesday September 1.

The school caters for 64 pupils, aged between three and 19 years old, with severe learning difficulties and the makeover is designed to rejuvenate essential learning and recreational areas.

The project comes after the supermarket in Watford named the school as its charity of the year.

The Dome Roundabout store will carry out work in the sensory garden, replacing a water feature, wind chimes and rebuilding a raised flowerbed.

The garden will provide fragment and brightly-coloured plants along with different types of surfaces and pathways for the enjoyment of the students with impaired senses.

Sainsbury’s regional manager Nick Smith recently challenged colleagues from across the area to come up with a project that would make a difference in the community and the Breakspeare School project won.

Mr Smith said he was impressed with how the staff had risen to the challenge, finding materials, planning labour and co-ordinating the project.

He is looking forward to helping on the day and said: “This is a really great initiative that will make a big difference to Breakspeare School, the students and the wider community it serves."

A grand opening will take place at a later date after the students have had time to settle in.
