A second politician has condemned London Midland's decision to cancel every train service in the country on Sunday.

Richard Harrington, the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Watford, slammed the decision, which London Midland bosses blame on “staff shortages”.

He said: “The decision taken by London Midland is just not acceptable. Many people rely on these trains and to cancel them due to staff shortages is not good enough.”

Mr Harrington said his team has recently conducted a transport survey, which found almost 80 per cent of people using Watford Junction did not think they were getting value for money.

He added: “Our survey shows that there is already a great deal of dissatisfaction with the service as it is and this latest news will come as a further blow to those who travel on London Midland trains.”

The survey collected more than 150 responses, revealing a “great deal of dissatisfaction from commuters in and out of Watford”.

Mr Harrington added: “As many of the constituents in Watford regularly commute in and out of the town, I felt it was hugely important to carry out this survey.

“The results of the survey have highlighted a number of problems with the services currently provided.

“Some of these problems may take a long time to remedy but there are some issues that could be easily resolved.

"Improved train cleanliness, better signs and more information are things that would go towards improving people’s journeys yet would be of little cost to the train companies.

“Poor value for money is a huge problem and I implore the train companies to take proactive steps in addressing this as this should be their number one priority.

“Commuters pay a lot for their tickets and they deserve better value for money.”
