A COUNCILLOR for Three Rivers was one of 400 delegates to be honoured at a ceremony in New Delhi recently.

Councillor Amrit Mediratta, leader of the Conservative group at Three Rivers District Council, was presented with a Hind Ratan (Jewel of India) award at a ceremony in New Delhi on the eve of India's Republic Day celebrations.

Four hundred delegates of Indian origin from 52 countries gathered in New Delhi on the occasion of the 54th anniversary of India's Republic Day.

The event was organised by the Non Resident Indians (NRI) Welfare Society of India, which operates with the backing of the Government of India.

The three-day event was attended by several high-ranking government ministers.

The award for Councillor Mediratta, who is a second generation British Indian from Kenya, was given for outstanding services and achievements.

He said he was honoured to be recognised for his charitable work.

He said: "I have been actively involved with two charities to help street children in Bangalore in South India and Calcutta in the State of Bengal."
