Liberal Democrats have marked World Sight Day by becoming part of an international photograph montage.

An image of a blindfolded Sal Brinton, the prospective parliamentary candidate for Watford, and town councillor Mark Watkin will become part of a tapestry of thousands of photographs taken across the world to highlight the fact that twice as many women than men are blind.

Ms Brinton, who is a trustee of Christian Blind Mission (one of the partners in Vision 2020, the organisers behind World Sight Day), said: "We are trying to highlight the fact that twice the number of women and girls are blind than men, usually because they don't get fair access to treatment.

“Most blindness in developing countries can be treated with low cost medicine or surgery, and a return to sight often means a return to earning a living or access to school."

Councillor Watkin added: "I was really shocked to hear that two out of every three blind people are women. I had no idea that women do not get the chance of treatment and I'm pleased to support the campaign."
