The South Oxhey Community Choir, which rejected a £1,000 grant from a British National Party (BNP) councillor earlier in the month, has received at least two replacement cash offers from readers of the Watford Observer.
The choir, which starred in the recent television series Unsung Town, feared any donation from the controversial party could taint its public image and offend its many ethnic minority members.
At least two readers have since contacted the choir offering to match the grant after the story was first reported by this newspaper and then by the BBC.
Committee member Russ Clancy said he was “delighted” by the offers, which are expected to be finalised in the coming weeks.
