A development in Radlett which has caused considerable debate among residents was deferred at a Hertsmere Borough Council planning committee meeting tonight.

A proposal to demolish a house on the site at 2 Shenley Hill, to make way for 12 two and three-bedroom flats has been strongly objected by residents.

Many objectors who have signed a petition opposing the plan were present at the meeting.

Vivian Charrett, speaking at the meeting for Aldenham Parish Council and Radlett Green Belt Society, said: “This is overbearing and out of character for the area, and will create a traffic nightmare.”

Despite the Highways Authority considering the development an improvement to road safety, councillors suggested that the entrance to the building would cause traffic queues at peak times.

Councillors voiced concerns that motorists approaching the site from a hump-back bridge in Shenley Hill would be unable to see traffic ahead.

It was on this basis that councillors voted to defer the decision pending more information from the Highways Authority.

Committee members took into consideration that the developers could take the case to appeal if it was not deliberated within a few days.
