Fencer gets GB call

YOUNG fencer Katie Perott has proved a big hit with British selectors after an impressive display at a senior fencing competition in Bristol recently.

The 14-year-old did so well at the event, against adult competition, that she has won her first GB call-up and will now be competing for Britain in an under-20 A grade meeting in Portugal next month.

Perott, who at 14 is the youngest you can be to compete on the senior stage, made the last eight of the Bristol Open competition.

And now coach Harry Jones reckons next month's international appearance could be the first of many for the talented fencer, who competes for the Wellsbourne Club at Wycombe Sports Centre.

He said: "I don't think she will win it but I'll be quite satisfied if she makes the last 64."

Around 150 fencers are likely to compete in the event.

But Perott is not the only success story the Wellsbourne Club have.

Royal Grammar School pupil Tom Bennett, 15, is also making his mark after shooting up to number one in the country's cadet rankings.

Bennett, who also competed in Bristol, reached the last 32 in the men's senior event there.
