A batch of young Masterchefs will go head-to-head in the kitchen as they cook a two-course meal with ingredients costing no more than £14.

Pupils from Year 10 and 11 at six schools across Watford will demonstrate their cookery skills as they take part in the local final of the Rotary Young Chef competition, hosted by the professional catering facilities at West Herts College.

Bushey Meads, Francis Combe Academy, Parmiter's, St Michael's, Townsend and Watford Grammar School for Girls have all held contests to find their best cooking talent studying a GCSE in food technology.

They will now come together to prepare a healthy main course and dessert for two people, costing no more than £14, before a panel of culinary experts pick the winner.

All ingredients are supplied by Sainsbury's in Apsley, while Vicky Jeffryes, executive chef at The Grove, will be among the judges.

Special guests will also include Claire Ward MP, the vice chairman of Watford Borough Council Alan Burtenshaw and his wife Councillor Ellie Burtenshaw, and chief executive of Watford Chamber of Commerce Roger Gagan.

The winner will then go forward into the district final cook-off for a place in the national final in April next year.

They will also enjoy a meal at Watford Chamber of Commerce's Glasshouse restaurant and the chance to work in the hotel's kitchens.

The event, sponsored by Filippo Berio olive oil, takes place at West Herts College's Food Academy at its Cassio campus on Saturday, November 21.
