Hundreds of shopping bags have been filled with food donations for a Watford homeless charity.

Members of Stanmore Synagogue asked shoppers at the Broadwalk in Edgware on Sunday to buy additional items that could be donated to the Watford New Hope Trust.

The fundraiser was held as part of Mitzvah Day, which saw 15,000 Jewish people across the country donate their time to help good causes.

The food collected in Edgware will now be donated to the Watford charity later this week.

Jacqui Rudolph and Juliet Schneiderman, Mitzvah Day project organisers, said: “In these credit crunch times it’s good to know we can all still do our bit for charity by giving, not cash, but a little time.

“That’s what Mitzvah Day is all about and I am delighted that so many people turned out to support our event.”
