Students across south west Hertfordshire have bagged themselves first prize with their designs for a district council competition.

Pupils at Harvey Road School in Croxley Green and at Sarratt School designed artwork for the new Three Rivers Bags for Life campaign.

At a formal prize-giving in October, they were crowned winners in the junior and infant categories respectively and thanks to their artistic endeavours, their schools have each been given a bench made from recycled plastic.

Jayan, in Year 2, from Sarratt, said: “Everyone has been sitting on the bench since we first got it.

“I am happy I won it."

Lydia, in Year 3, from Croxley Green, said: "It was really nice to take part in the competition.

“I'm excited because I won a bench for Harvey Road School."

The bags, made from natural fibre jute, sport Lydia’s superhero and planet earth design, and help to highlight the importance of reducing the usage of plastic bags.

Nick Rowlands, headteacher of Harvey Road School, said: "We were keen for the children of Harvey Road to take part in this competition to remind them to use reusable bags whenever possible.

“It was a great way to engage with lots of residents, as the children can spread the message to their friends and families.

“We're delighted that Lydia won a bench for the whole school to enjoy."

Residents can pick up their Bag for Life at Three Rivers House, Chorleywood Parish Council, Abbots Langley Parish Council and at participating local primary schools, for £2. Schools which sell bags will receive a refund of 85p.
