Plans for the refurbishment of Watford Colosseum are set to be unveiled.

Architects, members of the design team, Watford Borough Council officers and staff from HQ Theatres will be available to talk about the improvements which, it is hoped, will turn the celebrated music hall into a world class entertainment venue.

As part of the design, HQ Theatres has moved to ensure the Colosseum's outstanding acoustics are preserved; that the BBC Concert Orchestra will secure a residency; the bars and hospitality areas are improved and full access to the balcony will be available via a lift from the new extended foyer.

Mayor Dorothy Thornhill said: “Residents are very clear about wanting to see the Colosseum restored to its former glory.

“They want a venue that will put Watford on the map and a first class all-purpose entertainment centre for everyone.

“To give the Colosseum the best possible chance of achieving this we are investing in its future. The unique character of the building and its world-renowned acoustics will be preserved, along with much needed improvements to customer facilities, seating and lighting.

“This is a great opportunity for residents to come along for a chat and to see what we have planned.” Michael Ockwell, MD of HQ Theatres, added: “We are very excited that we are now in a position to share that vision with the people who will hopefully support their local performance venue.

“Our aim is to offer the best available productions ensuring that the programme offers something for everyone while building on the Colosseum’s superb reputation for classical music.”

The event, on Thursday, December 10, will begin inside the small hall of the Colosseum at 6.30pm with refreshments before a brief introduction to the plans at 7pm.
