Watford's new Fire Station was opened by a procession containing more than 100 years of fire service history today.

A steam engine from 1896, a Leyland engine from 1937 and three modern operational engines took part in a procession to their new home in Lower High Street.

Steve Tant, station commander, said: “Today represents the culmination of a lot of hard work. It's a very proud moment seeing a hundred years of the fire service.

"There's a lot of history at Whippendell Road and hopfeully we can bring that spirit with us.”

The parade was organised by curators of Hertfordshire fire museum, which was housed on the grounds of the old Rickmansworth Road station.

The Hertfordshire Fire Service Museum can now be found at the new station, and will be open on the first Saturday of the month from April next year.
