FANS of traditional British beer flocked to Watford for the three days of its annual ale festival which ended yesterday.
Seventy beers were on offer at the West Hertfordshire Sports Club in Park Avenue with traditional ciders and perries served in a marquee.
Andrew Vaughan, of the Watford and District branch of the Campaign for Real Ale, told the Observer yesterday afternoon: “It takes a lot of hard work - I've had to take a week off work – but it's definitely worth it to promote real ale.
“We've had 800 people on Thursday and Friday and quite a few more today.
“Like other beer festivals around the country we are finding more and more people coming every year, so it's obviously working.
“I ordered 97 firkins - each one nine gallons – and we are still serving about 40 beers.”
Nigel Owens, who travelled from Ashford in Kent for the festival, said: “It's been a really good day.
“It's better than the Great British Beer festival in Olympia -there's more room to sit and a much better atmosphere.
“We've had some fantastic beer and my only complaint is quite few have sold out, but that's not surprising on third day.
”My favourite so far is from the Enville brewery in Stourbridge in West Yorkshire – that was really good.”
