Bushey Museum has recieved a new addition to its Lucy Kemp-Welch collection

Bushey Museum has acquired another large oil painting by Lucy Kemp-Welch to add to its collection.

The picture, titled Logging in Grizedale Forest, was commissioned by a family in Cumbria, before being passed on to the nearby Hawkshead Village Institute.

In 1975 the painting was taken on by Hawkshead Market Hall Trust.

Anne Blessley, Bushey Museum, said: “Recently the Hawkshead Market Hall Trust felt that the painting would be more appropriate in Bushey Museum’s collection and has put it on long term loan.”

“The picture is dominated by working horses. The scene is a midday break in a forest clearing, while three men gather round a fire. The picture pairs dark and light, which is typical of Kemp-Welch.”

Lucy Kemp-Welch was the first president of the Society of Animal Painters and her works are in many public collections including Tate Britain and the Imperial War Museum.
