A man praised by a judge for chasing down a gang of burglars has described his heroics as an “instant reaction”.

Roger Ingram gave chase to three men after they stole jewellery worth £3,000 from a house in Stratford Way, Watford, in January this year.

When he caught one of the men, the other two ran back and hit Mr Ingram with a pillowcase containing the jewellery.

They then ran off towards Watford town centre, leaving the pillowcase behind.

Mr Ingram has now been awarded £250 in recognition for his actions, after one of the burglars, 18-year-old Jamie Norman, was sentenced to 30 months in a young offenders institute in April.

Mr Ingram said: “It was an instant reaction to pursue the burglars and I didn’t really have much time to think about it.

“I was happy to be able to help the victim of the crime and also the police in solving the crime.”
