Vandals have caused “thousands of pounds-worth of damage” to a section of an Abbots Langley park over the weekend.
The south side of Leavesden Country Park was targeted late on Friday evening, with fences and trees destroyed and the gazebo ripped down.
Sergeant Neil Canning, said: “We were notified that there had been an incident at the south side of the park on Saturday morning.
“There has been significant damage to the gazebo, fencing and tree saplings – several thousand pounds-worth we believe.
“We found a few beer cans, so we think that damage has been caused by drunken youths.
“We normally patrol the north side of the park and have managed to keep anti-social behaviour in Abbots Langley down over the past few months - so this latest development is hugely disappointing.”
Police believe that youths have taken advantage of officers tending to patrol the north side of the park over the south.
Sergeant Canning said: “The park attracts youths from all over Hertfordshire as it’s quite out-of-sight.
“As this latest incident wasn’t reported on the evening, we are urging witnesses to come forward with any information.
“We have gone door-to-door questioning residents and are determined to catch those responsible.”
Anyone with information should telephone police on the non-emergency number 0845 33 00 222.
