As weather temperatures plummet Hertfordshire Highways’ gritting team will be out in force tonight gritting roads to prepare for possible snow tomorrow.
The county’s A and B roads, all major bus routes, at least one road in and out of the village and industrial areas and shopping centres will be salted by Hertfordshire Highways.
Stuart Pile, executive member for highways and transport, said: "Our gritting crews keep a constant eye on the latest weather forecasts so that salting is carried out before freezing conditions occur.
“We ask road users to take extra care in these conditions and allow more time for journeys.
“Drivers cannot always see that the road is icy, so leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front, steer and brake very gently and reduce your overall speed.”
According to Mr Pile, the gritting team is fully prepared, with enough salt to carry out the normal gritting runs and he does not anticipate that there will be any shortages.
