A marathon runner who lost two prized medals in a burglary has had his “faith in humanity” restored after he was presented with a new London Marathon medal.
The plight of Mick Frost and his wife Caroline was revealed in the Watford Free last month, after the break-in at their home in Pretoria Road, West Watford.
Mick had completed the Flora London Marathon in April and the 40th New York Marathon in November this year to raise money in honour of his niece Megan, who suffers from Cystic Fibrosis.
But on Monday, November 11, he returned home at about 6.50pm to find Caroline's jewellery had been snatched along with the medals after a pair of burglars were spotted leaving the terraced property.
However, after reading the story in the Watford Free, a generous donor, who has asked to remain anonymous, handed this newspaper another London Marathon medal, which has now been presented to Mick.
Mick, 34, said: “It's just nice to know there are people out there who take heart in these things and take the time to read them, let alone do something about them.
“It's really a stroke of luck that the people who read it had a medal.
“It restores your faith in humanity.”
Mick, who works for a life insurance company in London, said there had been no news about the burglary, which took place days after he had returned from New York.
It was in October 2008 that he and his friends Daryl Frost and Tommy Garratt decided to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis by running two marathons this year.
They have now raised more than £6,000, with a further £2,000 for Cancer Research. The donation webpage will stay open until the end of the year.
Mick completed the London Marathon in five hours 43 minutes, forced to walk the final seven miles after suffering a stress fracture in his right foot.
Then in New York, he completed the 26.2 mile-course in an improved time of five hours 16 minutes, despite a recurrence of the foot fracture in the final three miles.
Asked whether he has plans to complete any more marathons, Mick said: “Watch this space. I'm meeting Daryl and Tommy on Thursday for our Christmas get-together. So we will probably be discussing options.”
Donations can be made to support Mick's campaign for Cystic Fibrosis at www.justgiving.com/2009_a_race_odyssey.
