Lifetime of asbestos exposure led to death of South Oxhey man

An 84-year-old South Oxhey man died of asbestos poisoning after a lifetime of exposure to the substance.

Thomas Price's exposure to the toxin began while in the Navy during the 1940s. He then worked as an engineer where he was responsible for mixing asbestos for use in construction.

He received medical treatment at Watford General Hospital throughout August this year after a deterioration in his weight and health.

An inquest held at Hatfield Coroners' Court today (Wednesday) heard that Mr Price, from Muirfield Road, was admitted to hospital on Thursday, October 29, suffering from worsening breathlessness and confusion and was offered palliative care.

He died on Sunday, November 1, at Watford General Hospital.

Mr Price's cause of death was listed as malignant mesothelioma, a type of cancer, which Coroner Edward Thomas said was attributable to his significant exposure to asbestos throughout his working life.

The coroner recorded a verdict of industrial disease.
