Hertfordshire probation service prepares for trust status

Hertfordshire Probation has teamed up with other crime-fighting organisations for its staff conference in anticipation of changes to their community offender management.

The conference was held in anticipation of the Probation becoming a Trust in April next year.

The change will mean community services for offenders are contracted out of the service.

The conference was opened up to several organisations including the Watford Afro-Caribbean Association and Supporting Others through Volunteer Action (SOVA), a group that offers support and advice to offenders.

A special award was presented to Phil Cockroft, a SOVA volunteer, on the day.

Delegates heard speeches from the Chief Inspector of Probation Andrew Bridges, East of England Director of Offender Management Trevor Williams and Guardian crime correspondent Erwin James.

Tessa Webb, Chief Officer at Hertfordshire Probation, said: “The day was a great success and it was very good to have members of our partner organisations with us, contributing their views of our service. They learned more about us, while our staff learned how our partners saw us."
