'Banksy' graffiti appears in Watford town centre

Street art in the style of graffiti artist Banksy has appeared in Watford town centre.

This stencil of a man holding a sign that reads “I need a Facebook” was painted on a wall close to the High Street, accessible through an alley way that leads from Exchange Road and runs alongside Jackson Jewellers.

However, it is unclear whether the artwork is the real thing or was produced by a copycat.

It was spotted this morning (Monday) by Charles London, a IT security engineer from the Reeds Estate.

The 47-year-old said: “I was walking through the town and decided to cut through there and hey presto. It's certainly made my day.

“It's the unmistakeable style with the overriding statement. I definitely think it's genuine.”

Banksy had become known for his often-political artwork appearing in cities across the country, and his paintings now fetch thousands of pounds at auction.

However, his real identity remains a mystery, despite several attempts to find out who the artist really is.

In 2006, a Banksy copycat with the signature 'Muddy' left several images in Abbots Langley High Street and in Bedmond.

Yep vandalism pure and simple - Banksy would laugh at this amaturish attempt at art and shallow message.
Come on observer, let's not encourage the wanna-be!

I for one quite like it. Ok, it's not exactly the Sistine Chapel, but it's a hell of a lot better than the mindless sh*t you see sprayed all over the skate park.
Hopefully in the future Banksy can spray paint something which will cheer up misers like Andy B and Reality-Bites.

The skate park is good. At least hey are not practising their art elsewhere.

Don't knock it. Some of it shows talent and it is not on the walls of public buildings.

Why are you people always so critical of the "mindless"?

My brother has been in a coma for three months and is technically brain dead, ergo mindless, but he would never dream of doing something like this, or anything else for that matter....

Whats the problem? This isnt vandalism and perhaps not even art?! BUT surely this is a welcome relief from a drab 'white wash wall', Watford should relax a little, it works in Bristol

I've studied art for 7 years and if you research the art of banksy and forget the red herring of the mysterious identity...it then makes you realise in his more controversial works he often speaks the mind of what thousands are thinking. Unfortunately I believe this particualar piece to be a fake, it doesn't seem to have the remnance of a classic banksy. It would be great for Watford if it was.
