Plans to demolish a historic Croxley Green primary school and build in its place five houses were thrown out by councillors last night.
Charity Leukaemia Research, which owns the former Yorke Road School, had applied to Three Rivers District Council for permission, prompting vocal opposition from many local residents.
The council’s development control committee heard how the Victorian school, closed in 1977, was one of the last remaining buildings of the Dickinson era in the village and must be preserved.
The committee also heard from the site’s owners how the development would provide a much-needed funding boost.
Its members, however, were unmoved and threw out the application.
Council leader and committee member Ann Shaw said after the meeting: “We all agreed that this was a historical building that needed to be retained. I wouldn’t have any problem with it being considered for renovation but what I don’t want to see is it pulled down.”
