Plans to build more than 200 homes on a disused college campus in north Watford will be debated this week.

Taylor Wimpey has submitted plans to build 47 one-bedroom flats, 104 two-bedroom flats, two three-bedroom flats, 28 three-bedroom houses and 36 four-bedroom houses on the site of the West Herts College's former Leggatts campus, in Leggatts Way.

The application includes a neighbourhood centre, play space and car parking.

The Watford Observer reported earlier this month that mediators could be called in to negotiate an agreement between Watford Borough Council and the developers, after planning officers labelled the application “unacceptable”.

However, officers have now recommended the plans for approval ahead of Thursday evening's development control committee meeting.

In their report, officers described the proposed development as “high quality” and a “successful development”.

A council representative said there had been “negotiations on route to a revised planning application which has resulted in substantial improvements”.

However, he added that should committee members refuse planning permission, mediators could still be brought in to find a agreeable solution.

Previously, plans for 248 homes on the site, which is bound by the A41 and the former Bill Everett Community Centre, were withdrawn after they were recommended for refusal in 2007.

A second application for 235 homes was later formally refused on December 11, 2008.
