Aspiring poets from a Kings Langley school have taken part in a nationwide poetry competition.

Year 7 pupils from Rudolf Steiner School, in Langley Hill, have entered Poetry Explorers 2009, a contest run once a term.

Open to seven to 11-year-olds the competition was created to help students build their creative and literacy skills.

For student Danielle, 11, from Berkhamsted, poetry is very important.

She said: “It’s a way of expressing your feelings.

“If you're angry you'll write an angry poem, if you're happy you'll write a happy poem."

A number of poems will be selected by the Young Writers editorial team, an imprint of Forward Press Limited, to be published in “Poetry Explorers 2009 – Verses from the South”.

All the students taking part from Rudolf Steiner are delighted that they could be selected for publication.

Simeon, 11, from Kings Langley, said: “It's very exciting, I have always wanted to be a writer.”

The poetry book will go on sale from March 31 and will be kept at a number of libraries across the Republic of Ireland and the UK - including the British Library.

Priya Mahtani, from Rudolf Steiner School, said: “A lasting record of their achievement, the school is especially proud to celebrate its pupils' confident creative writing abilities.”
