Underprivileged children from a Kenyan school have been provided with plates to eat from thanks to the efforts of a school in Bedmond.

Students from Kyambai Primary School in Kenya, were using old plastic containers and lids to hold their food, but now have aluminium plates to eat from after Bedmond Village Primary School held a “table top sale” at the beginning of January.

Esther Muoso, of Parsonage Close, Abbots Langley, founder of Kenya Charity, an organisation which aims to help provide food and clothing for children living in Kyambai, said: “When I visited Kyambai last year, I noticed that many of the children were recycling old lids and containers to hold their food.

“One girl had only a small lid, which wouldn’t hold an adequate meal and when I asked if the children had plates I found out they didn’t.

“The containers were unhygienic, so I thought it was important that the students in the village school were provided with plates.

“The support I have had from Bedmond Village Primary School has been fantastic and the money they have raised has made such a difference.”

Raising about £100 from the charity event, 400 plates are now being used by the Kenyan students.

Mother-of-two Ms Muoso has worked tirelessly to raise money for Kenya Charity, after she saw first-hand the struggle they face for basic provisions.

She initially started fundraising for Kyambai following the death of her son and is now encouraging others to get involved.

Ms Muoso said: “I needed to do something positive at the time and for me this was it.

“If I could adopt all the children of Kyambai, I would. Their faces light up when they see how much people care.

“Anyone can get involved - their small contribution makes a huge difference.”
