Councillors say they could save £30,000 a year by shunning the district’s weeds.
For many years Three Rivers District Council has assumed responsibility for weed spraying along public highways, keeping them free of unsightly green growths.
Council legal officials, however, believe Hertfordshire County Council should take responsibility for the operation under the terms of the little known 1959 Weeds Act.
The council’s ruling executive committee has now written to County Hall to explore the possibility of transferring responsibility.
