Watford youngsters bowled over by trophy success


Members of the Watford Youth Bowling Club wowed spectators at a recent regional tournament by scooping an impressive 18 trophies.

The boys and girls, aged five to 17, travelled to Dunstable last Sunday to compete against nearly 700 others at the last day of the South of England Junior Open.

Wearing bespoke black and red tournament shirts, they competed in across a variety of age ranges in singles, doubles and team events.

The doubles category winners were:

  • Bailey West & Austin Taylor (aged 8)
  • Isobel Thomas & Yasmin East (aged 11)
  • Corey Hedley & Kieran Colby (aged 12)
  • Amy Maxwell (aged 12) & Laura O’Brien (aged 14)
  • Kirsty Moore (aged 17) & Beth Hedley (aged 15)

The singles:

  • Austin Taylor (aged 8)
  • Billy Chapman (aged 8)
  • Corey Hedley (aged 12)
  • Amy Maxwell (aged 12)
  • Adam Maxwell (aged 14)

All Events:

  • Austin Taylor (aged 8)
  • Corey Hedley (aged 12)
  • Amy Maxwell (aged 12)

Club secretary Sandie Hedley said: “This was indeed a record for Watford YBC and an incredible achievement from such a young set of bowlers.

“Their behaviour, etiquette and their enthusiasm was exemplary; they wore their shirts with pride and were a credit to Watford.”

The club, open to five to 18-year-olds, meets on Saturdays ( 9.30am – 12pm) and Tuesdays (for additional coaching) at the Hollywood Bowl, at the Woodside Leisure Centre. New members are always welcome.
