A dreary Sunday afternoon is the perfect excuse to catch up on some t.v and today I finally got round to watching the not so British Brit Awards where one of the performers was miming!! What has happened?
I thought the Brit awards were meant to celebrate the best of British music, and only British music and there I was watching it to find that a hefty amount of the awards went to non-British stars which really defeats the object of The Brits.
It began well with the awards being for British artists and then it turned; 4 out of the 13 awards were international ones. Don't get me wrong, the international artists who got awards are amazing, but surely they shouldn't be celebrated in The Brit Awards. The way I see it is that they are taking the places of real British talent who deserve to be celebrated, and at least recognized.
Other than the awards, there were outstanding perfromances from Lily Allen, Florence and the Machine, Jay Z with Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, JLS and Robbie Williams.
Then, there was the awful performance that belonged to a brave Cheryl Cole; I say brave as it was at the time of her marriage trauma's but she definitely shouldn't have mimed. I'm a massive fan of Cheryl Cole but miming is not the way forward, especially on a music awards show where everyone is celebrating the talent of people who can sing! If she wasn't able to actually sing in her performance, she probably shouldn't have bothered. On top of this, consistently throughout her performance of 'Fight for This Love' (which was very appropriate), she looked angry as if she could kill someone. Perhaps she would have rather been somewhere else and quite frankly, her performance was a let down.
Other than the international awards creeping in and a performance that was completely mimed, I did enjoy the Brit Awards and can't wait to see what the critics choice - Ellie Goulding brings to British music this year.
