Watford’s exclusive hotel The Grove found itself at the centre of a national media storm this morning after revelations that the England football team was bugged during its latest stay.
National newspapers are reporting that private conversations between players and team officials were secretly recorded – and the “dynamite” details offered for sale.
Football Association (FA) lawyers are currently battling to prevent details of the recordings, made before last week’s game against Egypt, becoming public.
A hotel spokesman told The Times this morning: “We do not know anything about it. We have been hosting England for three or four years and provide a very high level of security for them. They also bring their own security team. It would surprise me if they had been bugged here.”
The England team stays at the hotel before each Wembley home game.
