Volunteers wanted to help grow Watford school's vegetable patch

Budding gardeners at a Watford primary school are appealing for volunteers to help them create their own vegetable patch.

Pupils at Nascot Wood Junior School, in Nascot Wood Road, will take up their trowels as part of a new lunchtime gardening squad.

But the school is looking for volunteers who can spare some time to pass on their gardening skills and help the children grow their own vegetables, herbs and flowers.

It would also like to hear from anyone who can help provide compost, a garden shed, water butts and other containers.

The school hopes that in the future, the produce grown by the children can be cooked for their school lunches and even sold.

David Allen, deputy headteacher, said: “We're trying to teach the children a skill they don't have access to because many people don't grow vegetables any more.

“It's also going to open them up to new foods. If they grow them, they're more likely to eat them. Because they have grown them, they get excited and want to eat them so it's giving them access to health eating.”

Any volunteers willing to help the school should email admin@nascotwoodjm.herts.sch.uk.
