Glass recycling for Hertsmere residents

Residents in Hertsmere will soon be able to recycle their unwanted glass.

Hertsmere Borough Council is introducing kerbside glass collections that will run alongside other rubbish and recycling collections, following a decision at Wednesday night's executive meeting.

New black wheelie bins - the same size as those for normal waste but with a different coloured lid - will be delivered to all households to replace the black boxes currently used to collect plastic and cans.

Items that went into the black box will then be put into the new bin, as well as coloured glass, yoghurt pots, margarine tubs, microwave meal trays and plastic bags.

The bins are expected to be delivered to the Potters Bar area in September this year, ahead of Borehamwood in November, the Radlett area in January 2011, and Bushey in February 2011.

Councillor Jean Heywood, environment portfolio holder, said: "We are thrilled to be rolling out glass collections this autumn, when we will also collect a greater range of plastics. This is something that residents have asked for when we have consulted them so I'm sure they will welcome the news as well.

"Hertsmere's recycling rate is currently around 40 per cent thanks to the efforts of our residents and the collection of these additional materials will help us build on this and hopefully we will be up to 50 per cent by 2012.”
